Summary:

Sediments that rivers transport flow into the lakes, dams and harbors, and they sink to the bottom of the reservoir. Especially for harbors, the rate and degree of sedimentation should be determined to take some precaution to lengthen the economic life of the harbor.

Değirmendere watershed has heavy precipitation rates throughout year, which cause flood and serious erosion problems. This study shows that sediment caused by erosion is transported by Değirmendere River and deposited into the BlackSea at a location where the mouth of the river is very close to the Trabzon Harbor mouth. It is also revealed from the satellite images taken in 2000, 2003, and 2008 that the filling of Black Sea coast due to the construction of a new highway made the mouth of Değirmendere River 150 meter closer to the Trabzon Harbor mouth.

A 3D map showing the sea floor topography of Trabzon Harbor reservoir is produced using ArcGIS software and compared with an older version of a map that produced using the same methodology and software in 2002. Depth measurements are performed using mechanical sounding lead and horizontal positions where depth measurements done are determined using RTK GPS. Wave effects during depth measurement are eliminated using orthometric height values obtained from RTK GPS. Additionally, Mean Sea Level values for the days measurements done are acquired from Trabzon II mareograph station and these values are applied to the measurements to get corrected depth measurements.

7 cross sections are determined on the 3D map of sea floor topography of 2002 and 2003 and these cross sections are used to create graphics to evaluate any potential change in depths over sea floor of Trabzon Harbor. When these graphics are evaluated, it can be concluded that the depths are increased up to 218 cm along with the routes that large tonnage ships used; whereas the depths are decreased up to 183 cm along with the routes of small ships and boats.
