Summary:

This study was conducted to determine the subsurface conditions (the fractured or cracked aspect of the material) in a field (Mollaresul Plateau, Haymana, Ankara, Turkey) which is thought to be managed as a marble quarry. The ground penetrating radar (GPR) reflection profiling method was used because it was applied rapidly without causing any damage to the studied area for obtaining the detailed (high resolution) image of the shallow underground. Approximately N-S directed measurements on 10 profiles were collected with 100 MHz unshielded antenna using Ramac CU II GPR system. Due to low electrical conductivity of the marble and conditions of the environment being dry, Georadar provides penetration depths of about 35 and 40 m.

In addition to the basic data processing steps in assessing of data, the instantaneous amplitude and combined analysis of the phase-group sections used in evaluating of seismic reflection data were assessed with together. From interpretations of the instantaneous amplitude and phase-group sections; strong reflectors were observed for determining locations, extensions and sizes of the fractures that are in the investigation area. The continuous subhorizontal reflections to a maximum depth of 45 m to be mapped through marble mass were monitored on the interpreted radargrams for imaging extension of fractures in the mass.

Finally, in this study we investigate the potential of GPR measurements regarding the continuity of the joints and the properties of the joints in massive marble blocks in simple geometric models. The results of these studies suggest if the quarries are appropriate for an establishment or set the arrangement of the establishment if appropriate. The company yields from time and unit cost significantly without any unnecessary digs by these suggestions.
