Summary:

In this study, the effects of chemicals, chemicals concentrations and additive percent of melamine at the used adhesive on the properties of the medium density fiberboard (MDF) produced treating by fire retardant (FR) chemicals were investigated. In this aim, the fibers were treated with %5, %10, %15, %20 concentrations of various FR chemicals and the MDF panels were produced using MUF including %20 melamine. However, the second group was created to observe the effects of adhesive factor. In this group, the fibers only were treated with %10 concentrations of various chemicals and the MDF panels were produced using MUF including %15 and %10 melamine. The modulus of rupture, tensile strength, water absorption, thickness swelling, biological resistance, color change and fire experiments of the MDF samples were performed and the results were evaluated.

It was found that chemical type, chemical concentrations and additive percent of melamine on the adhesive were effective on the properties of produced MDF. It was determined that water absorption and thickness swelling, biological resistance, color change values increased with increasing chemical concentrations, the modulus of rupture and tensile strength values represented variability depending on chemicals type. Furthermore, it was also found that the modulus of rupture, tensile strength, biological resistance increased while water absorption, thickness swelling and color change values decreased with increasing melamine additive percent of adhesives. Also, fire parameters were determined with fire resistance test and thermogravimetric analyze (TGA) methods. According to fire resistance test; weight losses, temperature, CO2, CO values decreased, O2 values increased with increasing chemical concentrations and additive percent of melamine on the adhesive. Additionally, according to the results of TGA, the percent of undamaged part of the MDF samples increased with increasing chemical concentrations and additive percent of melamine on the adhesive.
