Summary:

      The aim of this study was to be improved the strength and water repellency properties of paper sheets by applying to paper surface with silica/wax mixture. Bleached softwood kraft, unbleached softwood kraft and fluting paper used for corrugated board production were used in this study and silica / wax mixture was treated on paper these paper sheets by blade coating technique.

The performance of silica / wax mixture applied to paper sheets surface was evaluated by means of burst strength, water repellency properties represented water retention value and contact angle of paper. These properties of paper sheets were determined at different contact time in water. The best performances of silica/wax mixture were designated for bleached softwood kraft paper sheets. Unbleached softwood kraft paper and fluting paper sheets followed to bleached softwood kraft paper sheets from point of view of silica/wax mixture performance, respectively. The best performances of hydro wax and silica mixture applied to paper sheets surface were found in bleached softwood kraft paper sheets and fluting and unbleached paper sheets followed to it, respectively. When water retention value of paper sheets decreased, contact angle of paper sheets increased by being applied silica/wax and silica/hydro wax mixture to surface of paper sheets. It was determined that the low concentration in silica/wax mixture had positive effect on paper sheets performance.
