In this study, the performance properties of medium density fiberboard (MDF) produced using montmorillonite nanoclay with some fire retardant chemicals (aluminium hydroxide/aluminium trihydrate (ATH), magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2, zinc borate (ZB) and chitosan, which is a natural polymer, were determined. Montmorillonite nanoclays, which have two diffferent contents, were used as single and mixture with other chemicals at 2-4% rates in the MDF production. The physcial, mechanical, thermal-fire, surface-morphological and biological properties of produced MDF panels were investigated.

According to the obtained results; the effects of nanoclay type, chemicals and their application rates on the properties of produced fiberboard were generally found to be positively. It was determined that the use of nanoclay with other chemicals had a synergistic effect and these effects varried depending on the type of chemicals in the mixtures. The effects of two montmorillonite nanoclays with different contents on the properties of the fiberboard varied. As a results of thermal-fire tests, it was determined the fire resistance properties of MDF panels produced with this chemical combinations increased. Furthermore, notably improvements were seen on the mechanical properties and generally, good results were obtained above the test’s standards. Physical properties resulted with different trend depending on experimental parameters. Additionally, it was found that, the chemical parameters gave positive results at the end of fungay decay test and improved biological resistance of fiberboard.
