Summary: In this study, it has been determined optimum sulphate pulping conditions obtained Douglas fir wood which known as a fast growing species. Sulphate process has been chosen for pulp production, because it could apply to all the lignocellulosic materials and it could give higher pulp strength. Firstly, Douglas fir wood samples has been analyzed and its chemical compositions were determined as 74.4 % holocellulose, 59.25 % cellulose, 46.97 % alpha-cellulose, 27.87 % lignin, 0.18 % ash, 7.32 % solubility in 1 % NaOH, 4.43 % solubility in hot water and 3.73 % solubility in alcohol-benzene (2/1) mixture. After that, to determine optimum pulping conditions, it is changed the most effective pulping parameters systematically and 14 pulping trials were carried out. After the determining the physical and optical properties of the pulps, statistical evaluations were made on obtained data, and the most convenient pulping condition was resolved as 90 minutes the time at maximum temperature, 170 oC pulping temperatures, 16-18 % active alkali and 30 % sulphidite for the liner grade sulphate pulp. As a result, it was concluded that Douglas fir wood can be used instead of pine which is utilized wide spread in Turkish pulp production.Key Words: Douglas Fir, sulphate process, pulping conditions, delignification, strength properties of pulp
