Summary: This study consists of three parts. In the first part, the raw Na - bentonite was upgraded with hdrocyclone process to obtain a Na rich bentonite and to remove the impurities such as feldspar, quartz, calsite and biotite. In the second part, the Na rich bentonite was treated with HTAB (R(CH_3)_3NBr (R: C_16H_33)), which is commonly used in the literature, at different concentrations to modify the bentonite surface and the extend the interlayer spaces. At the same time depending on the ammount of the HTAB added, the changes induced to the surface polarity and interlayer space was determined. In the third part, the modified Na-bentonite was dispersed in ground epoxy resin to obtain the clay/epoxy matrix. This matrix was poured in to a teflon mold made according to the ASTM D638-03 standart. The teflon mold was then cured in a microwave oven to obtaine composite bars which were analysed through tensile tests.
