Summary:

This study concerns wastewater distillation by using natural vacuum technique. The main objectives pursued in this study are to determine the parameters effecting on the system, and develop an ideal model of the system, and design and establish the system, and determine the operation types of the system, and investigate the creation of natural vacuum in the system, and the balancing and feeding with water of the system, and perform the thermodynamic and error analysis.

In this study, the distillation processes were conducted in two different cases. One is the natural vacuum distillation as free mass convection (N.V.F.M.C.) and the other is the natural vacuum distillation as forced mass convection (N.V.FD.M.C.). After the experimental data was collected, the energy analysis was made in the scope of the first law analysis of thermodynamics, and also the exergy analysis was in detail performed in the scope of the second low analysis of thermodynamics. Moreover, the results from the experiments were compared theoretically and analytically for each system. Also, the thermodynamics evaluation criterion (TDC) was derived in order to evaluate the distillation systems having regard to energy saving and the production capacity of the distilled water.

It was concluded that, depending on the wastewater temperature, the ratios of the amounts of distilled water from the N.V.FD.M.C distillation type to those from the N.V.F.M.C distillation type was between 1.4 and 1.6. According to the theoretical and experimental results, 2.6 kWh of energy was approximately utilised in the N.V.FD.M.C distillation type while 2.5 kWh of energy was being used in the N.V.F.M.C distillation type in order to produce 1 kg of the distilled water. In case of the reduction of heat and pressure drops, 0.7 kWh of energy is needed in the N.V.F.M.C distillation type while 1.3 kWh of energy is required in the N.V.FD.M.C distillation type.
