Summary:

In this study, the frictional behaviours of cam mechanisms, the important functional parts of engines, were investigated. Knowing the frictional behavior and decreasing of it at the contact region between cam and tappet are very important in the cam mechanism transmitting motion. A new measurement method is therefore developed and frictional forces at the contact region are also measured.

In this study, the behaviours of four types of different additives which are added into base oil using in automotive engine were investigated. In addition, the trajectory on the cam and follower was determined and measuring the surfaces roughnesses, the effects of these on the behaviours of the friction in the cam mechanisms of the internal combution engines were obtained. Also, considering cam speed, spring preload force and oil inlet temperature, the effects of these parameters on friction behaviours were determined

The results obtained experimently were also supported by theoretically. The determining of the parameters which will be usefull has been carried out in the cam follower systems of the combustion engine using a computer program developed. The experimental and theoretical results are compared with analytical predictions.
