Summary:

      In this study, micro grooves have been formed precisely on the journal bearing surfaces at the circumferential and transverse directions and herringbone pattern. Micro-grooved and non-micro grooved bearings have been tested in the bearing test rig at different load and speeds. The Stribeck Curves which demonstrate friction behaviour of journal bearings and friction torque have been determined experimentally.

Micro grooved and non-micro grooved journal bearings have been tested in a test rig under four different dynamic loadings. The vertical and horizantal compenents of the loading applied and polar load diagrams have been determined experimentally. The variation of the friction force of bearings have been measured by using a newly developed friction force measurement system. The numerical calculations on the radial journal bearings has been done by using three different software, namely KissSOFT, Ricardo ORBİT and Shaffrath. The statically and dynamically loaded micro grooved and non-microgrooved bearings have been tested under the same experimental conditions. It was found that the experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement with each other. In addition to that the calculated oil film pressures, the journal bearing orbits and the friction coefficients have been determined by using experimental data. It was found that the maximum value for coefficient of friction and hence friction force are obtained from transverse micro grooved bearings. On the other hand, minimum friction was observed on the non grooved bearings. The herringbone, circumferential and non grooved bearings were provided those of values in descending order.
