Summary:

In this study the ring compression, a standard test method, which is used to determine the friction coefficient encountered in metal forming processes, has been modeled and the friction coefficient has been determined for various materials and temperatures.

In this study, first of all, the theoretical results which give the geometry arisen during ring compression test, has been modeled in FORTRAN and this deformation geometry’s effect on the friction coefficient has been determined.

Secondly, with using ANSYS, which is software for finite elements method the ring compression test has been modeled at different temperatures for different materials. The results have been converted into numerical data form to indicate how the friction coefficient between the workpiece (ring) and die (plate) differs and also have been prepared to obtain the friction calibration curves.

Results obtained from the friction calibration curves of same materials with the different temperatures showed that; temperature changes the numerical values of friction calibration curves. However, this changing is very small and also does not show any tendency to any direction. Also friction calibration curves obtained from the different materials supported this result.
