Summary: Today, the methods and procedures of ship structural designs, differ from country to country, from shipyard to shipyard and differ between ship types, in the limits of classification rules. But in general, structural design procedure can be defined similarly as follows. First of all, general arrangement plan is prepared by the basic design team. Then, structural arrangement is defined based on the general arrangement. And then, initial scantling of structural members are determined within rule-based design criteria. As to control results, required changes can be made for structural element scantlings. Application of these procedures is based on two different basis. First one is design point of view procedure that at the basic design stage, main dimensions, hull form, double bottom height, maximum stil water bending moment and etc. basic properties have been determined. After this stage, the initial scantlings of structural members are determined according to classification rules limits and/or by using similar ships features. The second one is, analysis point of view procedure that the simple or complex models of ship blocks, sub-blocks and members are generated and their structural analysis are carried out in software programmes by using different methods.
