Summary:

Vortex tube is a simple device which separates the compressed gas flow into two

flows of high and low temperature.

In this thesis, experimental and theoretical studies are carried out on vortex tubes. In

order to prevent energy loss and sudden change in the direction of the flow, helical vortex

tubes are designed at different length. Besides the vortex generators, effects of L/D, angle

of control valve and pressure on the performance of the system are investigated. The

temperature difference between cold and hot flows has been chosen as a target parameter

for optimization. Fort the values investigated the ones which have given the maximum

temperature difference, have been chosen as optimum values. Also, humidity of working

air, temperature of environment and insulation effect of Vortex tube have been

investigated. Furthermore, by using the first and second laws of thermodynamics, the

thermo dynamical analysis has been done. The results have been investigated in view of

these laws. Lastly, the location of stagnation point has been determined by using thermal

camera.
