Summary:

In this thesis, a three dimensionally modeled human hip joint with and without prosthesis was investigated by using finite element method. During this study, finite element models were prepared for three different prosthesis types, two different loading types as point and distributed load, and two different activities as walking and stair climbing motions. The muscle and the hip contact forces, those exist during walking and stair climbing, were considered as loading for finite element analysis of these 3-D models. This muscle and hip contact forces were applied to models of which represent healthy hip joint without prosthesis and THA (Total Hip Arthroplasty) applied hip joint with prosthesis. The stresses and strains which were occurred on cortical and trabecular layers of bone, prosthesis and bone cement which was used to assemble prosthesis into bone’s intramedullary canal, were determined at the end of the finite element analysis and compared. 23 factorial design method was chosen to design the stress values of finite element analysis and then statistical analysis was carried out by using analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. By analysis of variance method, the effects of main factors and interactions between the main factors on maximum von-Mises stresses of prosthesis, bone-cement, cortical and trabecular bones were determined for post-THA period.
