Summary:

Magnetic refrigeration is more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration technology compared to vapor compression refrigeration systems. Although magnetic refrigeration systems which operate in room temperature has not been maturely developed, it has a potential to be a substitute for conventional refrigeration systems in a few years. The thermodynamic cycle which is selected for designing the magnetic refrigeration system will directly affect efficiency of the system, helping to create more compact and economic system designs. Parametric investigation is carried out for magnetic Ericsson and Brayton cycles. Thermodynamic relations are established by statistical mechanics. Relations are simplified by regarding to high temperature or low magnetic field conditions. Cooling load, inherent regenerative loss, power input and coefficient of performance (COP) are obtained with simplified relations. Influences of heat reservoirs, magnetic intensity and the degree of irreversibility are analyzed. Results show that coefficient of performance decreases with the increase of temperature span. Inherent regenerative loss increases with the increase of magnetic field strength and the temperature of hot reservoir for Brayton cycle.
