Summary:

In this thesis, the airflow and particle distribution in an operating room with laminar ventilation system are investigated numerically for different geometric and flow conditions. In this study, the ceiling height, air exhaust – outlet position and number, laminar flow diffuser size, air change rate and particle diameter are determined as the research parameters. The effects on the particle distribution in the surgical field and air exchange efficiency of these parameters are investigated. An operating room that is of located in Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital is considered as a reference for the establishment of operating room dimensions. Numerical study is performed with ANSYS Fluent (v.15) software. For each research parameter examined, as a general character, it is determined that the laminar ventilation system creates an unidirectional airflow over the surgical area. It is determined that the amount of particle in the surgical field decrease with decreasing of the ceiling height in the operating room and increasing of the air change rate. In addition, it is found that the air – exhaust outlet number and location are effective in controlling the spread of infection and the particle concentration around the patient decrease significantly with increasing of the laminar airflow unit size.
