Summary:

Speed is an important issue in maritime transport and it is the main problem in the development of fast ferries and brings with it a number of challenges. Some of these challenges are those that lead to vertical movement of the ship, such as pitching, heave, mechanical fatigue, seasickness, danger to passengers and cargo safety. Today, there is an increasing trend in the design and use of different types of add-ons to improve maritime capability and to increase comfort. It is a preferred method to control ship movements to dampen the undesirable effects on ships. Therefore, shipbuilding engineers also work on the design, development and control of stability enhancing systems for damping the vertical acceleration caused by dipping and head stroke movements. This study deals with the examination of vertical movements in order to reduce the possible negative consequences of a fast ferry. In order to solve the problem, trim tab and T-foil systems as damping inserts and control methods of these systems were studied.
