Summary:

It was observed that over a wide range of test conditions fatigue strength and fatigue life of the binary zinc-aluminum alloys increased proportionally with increasing aluminum content. It was also observed that, small amount of copper additions improved mechanical properties including fatigue behaviour of the binary zinc-aluminum alloys. However, copper addition above a certain percentage decreased both tensile and fatigue strength of the alloys. The results, obtained from the fatigue tests were explained in terms of chemical composition, microstructure and strength of the alloys.

The highest fatigue life and fatigue strength was obtained from ZnAl40Cu3 alloy, which has the highest hardness and tensile strength, the lowest fatigue life and fatigue strength was obtained from ZnAl20 alloy, which has the lowest hardness and tensile strength.

The correlation of the experimental results showed that the fatigue behaviour of binary zinc-aluminum and ternary zinc-aluminum-copper alloys can be expressed by the Basquin equation.
