Summary:

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the traditional houses of Diyarbakır so as to determine the reflections of culture on the morphology and typology of the physical environment, to investigate the relationships of cultural behaviour, activities and settings with the aim of utilising culture based design principles in future housing designs for similar populations.

In the first chapter the aim and the scope of the study are unfolded. Based on definitions of culture as a change phenomenon powerful relations between culture and space are demonstrated in general, and idiosyncratic qualities of the culture under investigation are specified.

In the second chapter the methods employed in the research are fully explained, the plans of the chosen old houses are re-elevated, activities and their corresponding settings in these traditional houses are correlated, also with the aid of physical traces. Space syntaxs and semantics are interrelated through cultural, geographic and social fundementals. Space syntaxs of the houses is evaluated on the basis of symmetry and dispersedness by using permeability method that is also explained in full detail, in the same chapter.

The third chapter summarizes the findings on the relationships of cultural reflections, semantic codes, activities and settings. In the following two chapters, chapters four and five, the results obtained from the preceding two chapters are discussed and interpreted. The sixth and the last chapter covers the recommendations for the future.
