      In social life, the squares which are the urban gathering-meeting places developing with the wishes and neccesity of the people for gathering are one of the effective public places in the settlements. The squares can show different features which depend on the position, scale, degree of publicity and their functions. In these urban places, it will be possible to connect the different periods and understandings to each other by means of the continuity in the conventional settlement properties and architectural culture. In this work, it is aimed to attain information devoted to design guide and design briefs which can be used in the new applications related to squares and in the studies of the renovation and animation .

      In the first chapter , there exists a general view to the concept of square. Some information is also given on the determination of the local identity properties , and the methods and techniques followed for the scope of the improvement purposes of the design guide devoted to applications.
