Summary:

This study proposes energy and environment conscious architectural design and implementation principles , for designers, decision- makers, implementing bodies and the user.

Within the information society of the 21st millennium the fundamental principle of social development has been transformed due to the environmental problems. Now 'society-economy-environment' is the basic triangulation of sustainable development. In this connection architects hold great responsibility, due to the big share of energy the housing stocks consume and the role they play in environmental pollution.

Ecological and sustainable mass housing is a synthesis of both concrete and abstract values such as the ecological, social, political, ethical and the aesthetic ones. Therefore in the first part of the study general literature on ecology, sustainability and environmental problems are expounded.

In the second part of the study ecological and sustainable buildings, from all over the world are investigated and general design principles are derived from this part of research.

In the third and the fourth chapters of the study, four basic climatic categories are examined; climate contingent principles of ecological and sustainable design are formulated.

In the fifth chapter a sustainable model of design process with special emphasis on ecology is rendered. A mass-housing design model with fundamental concerns for ecological subsistence and environmental sustainability follows.

In the concluding chapters the hypothetical propositions of the study is discussed in relation to architectural theory, implementation and education.
