Summary:

Rural settlements are the settlements that meet the requirements of local people considering cultural values important, combining them with nature, being harmonious with land form and local climate. They are important for the creation of architectural culture amalgamating (unifying) natural environment with the agricultural activities, recreational activities, social forms, and houses and their related buildings within historical process (course). In this context, rural settlements that are formed and developed under different circumstances should be documented and prepared to the future.

The aim of the study is to obtain the information that lead to the design guidelines, which are useful to direct the new building applications and renewal/regeneration works in rural settlements. This study consists of four chapters; the general information, examination of literature and given field work results, conclusion and proposals, bibliography.

The first chapter, referring to rural settlements and their importance in general, discusses the necessities of protecting the local character, the formation of design policies and guidelines for practical purposes.

The second chapter consists of two sections; the examination of literature and the field work. In the first section, concepts, definitions and policies related to rural settlements, hierarchy of settlements, planning and design policies in Turkey and some foreign countries are given. The general characteristics of rural settlements in different regions of Turkey are also within the coverage of this section.

In the section of field work, at first, the study area and sample villages are introduced and the research process, research methods and techniques are explained in detail. Then, the whole analysis and evaluations of sample villages are given. The visual and quantitative analysis and evaluations cover the distant view of sample villages, structural characteristics of villages in general and group of buildings in particular, characteristics of sample houses and their immediate environment, architectural evaluation of sample houses.

The third chapter provides the results of research and proposals.
