Summary:

Studies on the effects of dams on physical and social environments started after the 1970s abroad and in the 1990s in Turkey. The continuing harmful effects of the dams that are completed or are still under construction both abroad and in Turkey show that there are some problems at the design and application stages. In this context, it is necessary that studies that will prevent and reduce the effects of dams on the environment that may exist during the planning-design, construction and operation stages be considered.

This study aimed to define the ideal model that will bring the prositive process that are based on the operation of dams; under the light of this model, to be a guide to the new applications in the prevention of the environmental effects of the dams; and to shine a light on eliminating the existing problems.

The first section of the study discusses the importance of dams and their effects on the environment, and presents what must be done and the scope of the study in order to develop the model to be used in applications. The Previous Studies (A) section presents as a literature review the effects of dams on the environment. The Previous Studies (B) section presents the Research Model, and the methods and techniques to be used in the study. In the third section, findings and analyses about the dams in field of study are presented. Evaluation of the dams are based on the data obtained through observations and interviews with the authorities and local people and through existing reports, and various environmental analyses of the dams in different valleys will be carried out.

The fourth section of the study investigates and classifies the effects of the dams that are found in their present states. The last section of the study presents conclusions and recommendations about the proposed model, sample dams and whole field of study.
