Summary:

Transparency and opacity concepts that effect the formation of architecture in the suitable extent of socio-economic and socio-cultural characteristics of societies, direct the user in accordance with the bringings of globalization and the needs of the era. And also these concepts give functional and symbolic messages to the user. The connotations of the concepts has drawn attention as an important factor for the architectural environments both to be percepted and interpreted by the user as well as the denotations. In this context, the aim of the study is to determine how the sub-concepts of the transparency and opacity concepts are percepted and interpreted (denotation/connotation) by the user. Study consists of two chapters as theoretical and practice:

Theoretical part is consisted of three chapters; Sub-concepts, Perception and Semiology. Firstly, the sub-concepts are defined and how they reflected to architecture are discussed in the context of architecture. Then the concept of perception, has a significant place in the relationship between human-built environment architecturally, is mentioned comprehensively examining the relationship between the architecture and it. Finally, semiology and signification (denotation/connotation) concepts are explained in detail which are important in terms of interpreting the architecture.

In practice part, the studies related to quastionnaire that was prepared in the light of information obtained from literature are made. In this context, pilot experiments and practices are realized simultaneously for creating the questionnaire (adjective pairs determination) and determining the sample group that would answer the questionnaire (public or expert group). Then prepared questionnaire is answered by the defined sample group and the anwers are transferred to computer. The obtained data is analyzed with Chi-square and Crosstab Analyzes and the validity of assumptions set out at the beginning of the study is searched.
