Summary:

In this study, the process of development of square buildings in architecture with time has been investigated. With an attemp to enlighten the subject, square buildings have been studied using visually dominated syntactic table. On examples selected from three different time periods defined as before modern, modern, and after modern, an analysis in terms of axial organization, spatial organization, and functional zones have been done.

In the first chapter, geometry, history of geometry, form, kinds of form, the symbolic meanings of forms, characteristics of square form, and the development of square planned buildings have been discussed.

In the second chapter, criteria that are used in building the syntactic analysis table which poses the conceptual framawork have been discussed in detail.

In chapter 3, the findings and detailed discussion of syntactic analysis have been given.

In the fourth chapter, various semantic and contextual consequences of findings obtained from the syntactic analyses are discussed in detail.

References are given in chapter 5.

In chapter 6, appendices and syntactic analysis tables used in appendices are presented.
