Summary:

      Design is a concept of creativity and an important factor in architectural design education.

The thesis named as ‘The Changing Meaning Of Shape In Architectural Design Education’ searches the main themes in general, such as; design education, historical process of design education, effects of design related courses on design and designers’ education, concept of shape in architectural design education, effects of basic geometric shapes (square, circle, triangle) on architectural design students.

      The effects are evaluated as formal and semantic ways by the help of survey analysis. The groups, whom the survey is applied, are chosen from the first and fourth year architectural design students. By the help of the thesis and in the end of searching the effects of basic geometric shapes (square, circle, triangle) on architectural design students, various symbolic/semantic properties are put forward. Moreover, these properties show differences from the first and fourth year architectural design students.

In this context, the first part of the thesis refers the concepts of architecture, design and education, the historical progress of architectural design education and design studios.

      The second part consists of the main works on the basic shapes (square, circle, triangle), and their symbolic/semiotic properties which are one of the main fundamentals of architectural design education, the method of the research, the application of the method.

In the part of the findings, the symbolic/semiotic analysis of basic geometric shapes (square, circle, triangle) in architectural design education takes place.

      In the end of the thesis, the results and proposals are put forward about shape and architectural design education.
