Summary:

      Green areas what should be in urban left own places to concrete structures in order to succumb the intense pressure of housing and business functions. Inadequate green areas, consumed and destroyed forests are increasingly changing climate of the city. Air pollution has become a basic problem in many of the cities. Thus, green roofs have become a necessity to increase green, which is gradually decreasing in the urban scale, in the architectural scale.

This analysis can be divided into three sections. In the first section, concepts of sustainability and ecology, place of the historical development and architectural design, the concept of green roofs and the historical development of green roofs, place of ecological context in architecture have been discussed. Within the framework ofthe concepts of “sustainability” and “sustainable architecture”, the advantages of green roofs, applicability and place in the design of the building as an architectural element have been discussed and tried to elaborate. In this context, the historical development of“Green Roofs”, application methods, necessary attributions in building that should be applied green roof and types of planting of green roofs have been examined in detail in this section.

      In the second section, examples of green roofs on Turkey and other countries have been examined, and discussed standards related to green roofs. It has been compared over these examples.

In the last section , user consisting of three groups have been polled about “sustainable architecture” and “green roof”. The purpose of this analysis was to draw attention of candidates of architect, landscape architect, interior designer and academic staff and to encourage them about concepts of“sustainable architecture” and “green roof”.It has been used method of sematic differential questionnaire as a visual and method of closed-ended questionnaire to be determinent user informations and ideas in this questionnaire. Cronbach-Alpha the internal consistency coefficient was found to be 0.851. As a result of research, amongst perception ofgender, age, business, statute and class variables and samples about garden roofs, pitched roofs and flat roofs cannot been found a significant differentiation.
