Summary:

In this study, the varnishability properties of some commercially important wood species were searched, for this purpose five different wood species (beech , chesnut and alnus as hardwoods, and spuce and yellow pine as softwood) and 3 different types of varnish (cellulosic, polyurethane and acyrilic varnish)were used. In addition, in order to determine effect of sawn types and fiber directions, beech and spuruce were used. The test samples were prepared according to related standards after wood samples were conditioned and specific gravity in the 12 % moisture content , surface roughness, dry film thickness, adhesion strength, abrasion strength, , the weight loses due to abrasion, strach strength brightness and ultramicroscopic inspections were studied.

The result indicated that beech wood sampless had higher strength properties than the others. Also it was found that acrylic varnish strength properties were higher. As surface roughness decreased, all the strength properties increased except strach strength. It was found that the adhesion strength was higher for spruce wood samples cut in tangential direction while radial surface of beech wood samples gave the higher adhesion strength.
