Summary:

In this study, the relationships between the density profile and some technological properties of particleboard and effects of press type, cold and hot press pressures, wood type used on outer layers, the moisture content of the particle, paraffin usage and moisture content of the raw material on the physical (density profile, thickness swelling), mechanical (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bond strength) and surface roughness of particleboard were examined.

According to the results; while the boards pressed at continuous press had higher internal bond strength and surface roughness values than those of the boards pressed at bison press, these panels showed lower thickness swelling, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity properties. Increasing of cold press pressure from 7.5 kg/cm2 to 15 kg/cm2 improved all of the properties. However, increasing the pressure to 20 kg/cm2 did not change the properties of the panels. Increasing of entrance pressure of hot pressing positively affected the surface roughness, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity. The thickness swelling and internal bond strength were improved by increasing exit pressure of hot pressing. The most appropriate technological properties were determined from the panels made from poplar wood in the outer layers. Increasing of particle moisture content improved all of the properties of the panels except for internal bond strength. Paraffin usage in the only core layer of the particleboard improved the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity and decreased the surface smoothness of the panels. According to the test results; the appropriate technological properties were obtained from the panels manufactured from raw materials at 55 percent moisture content.
