Summary:

In this thesis, it was aimed to investigate some physical, mechanical and biological properties of heat treated spruce, larch, beech and poplar wood species spreading widely at Blacksea region in Turkey. In addition to heat treatment, wood samples were impregnated with boron compounds and, combine effect of boron impregnation and heat treatment on wood properties were also investigated. Specific density, water absorption, tangential swelling, anti-shrink efficiency were determined as physical properties of wood samples. Static bending, compression strength parallel to grain, holding of screw were investigated as mechanical properties of wood samples. Furthermore, decay test, corrosion rate, pH measurements and boron content in wood samples were determined as well. As a result, heat treatment improved physical properties of wood however, boron impregnation had a negative effect on physical properties. pH values decreased after heat treatment of boron pre-treated soft wood species however, pH values increased in hardwood species. Screw holding resistance, static bending strength and compression strength parallel to grain decreased with increasing treatment temperature, whilst corrosion rate increased. Decay resistance against to fungi attack increased more in heat treated soft wood species than hardwood species. Depending on wood species boron content in wood samples after heat treatment were determined as 37-98%.
