Summary:

It is obviously seen that urban designing experts have recently taken the concept of permeability into consideration in seeking quality. It is considered that this concept is important in all areas connected with design. The sub-concepts providing permeability and depending on these, the elements affecting the level of permeability in a positive way have been researched within this study that scrutinizes the concept of permeability in shopping streets for pedestrians which is one of the study areas of landscape architecture.

This study of thesis has put forward the necessity that the concept of permeability, considered to be important to create well designed and qualified environments, must take place among the design criteria of architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, and city and district planning in the professional discipline of designing. Intending to determine the level of permeability in the shopping streets for pedestrians in the context of physical, functional and perceptual properties and to increase the usage of space in a positive way, this study has been conducted in the coastal cities Trabzon, Rize, Ordu, and Samsun, in the Eastern Black Sea Region.

The study has been conducted in three stages. In the first stage, research of literature has been conducted and scope of this concept has been put forward. Components defining permeability and the criteria they are related to have been determined in the second stage. And in the third stage, behaviors of the users in the shopping streets for pedestrians have been observed, and then a study of questionnaire has been conducted in order to determine the choices of users. By means of the data obtained from this study of questionnaire, a second one has been conducted, and the objectives defining the concept of permeability.

In conclusion, it has been determined that permeability level of a street is closely related to physical, functional as well as perceptual dimensions, and determined that the best way of obtaining permeability is to handle these three dimensions together in the street spaces, and by means this established model a different and new point of view has been formed.
