Summary:

Within the framework of this study, how the structure of the therapeutic open spaces

in Psychiatric Hospitals must be and the activity areas to be needed in such areas have been

introduced. The effect of the enclosure and naturality levels, formed by structural and

plants materials to design the activity areas according to the personal space boundaries of

the users, on patients were put forward., Also, which enclosure and naturality levels were

preferred for which activity areas and particularly, the determination of the activity areas

suitable for the needs and wishes of the patients who have large personal space boundaries

was made and thus how they feel within these spaces was given.

The study includes two stages. In the first stage, the present situation of the

Psychiatric Hospitals in Turkey was determined in terms of therapy under the titles of

sensory stimulation, movement, control, and the hospitals were compared to each other

through the design criteria determined earlier. Moreover, the inventory of an ideal open

space therapy sample from abroad was made. In the second stage, the advantages of the

garden of the Ataköy Psychiatric Hospital, which has the worst therapeutic facilities, the

earlier and the design criteria for open space therapy unit were all considered, and thus the

solutions were offered for the present problems of the hospital and for the hospital in this

context, a new open space unit has been offered. At this stage, in order to determine the

personal space boundaries of the activity areas in the suggested open space therapy unit,

such criteria as natural-artificial and open-enclosed were used for every activity area. Later

on which options was liked or disliked for which activity area by the all users group have

been questioned. How they will feel in the option they chose has been put forward.

As a result; the affective factors in the choices of the patients and other users groups

(personal, local people, landscape architects, medicine faculty students) were put forward.

The need for landscape architects to cooperate with other disciplines while designing these

spaces and to produce designs suitable for the needs of the patients was emphasized.
