Summary:

Campus open spaces play an important role in meeting socialization and personal development needs of adolescents. Various studies have shown that space use of adolescents is different from that of general society: particularly their psycho-social nature and the activities they carry out towards this nature differ from those of the children and adults. However, only a limited number of studies have produced findings on the needs of adolescents towards obtaining gains related to development of psycho-social nature and on the spatial affordances required to carry out the activities aimed at meeting such needs. This thesis study aims to analyze use of campus open spaces by the adolescents.

“Spatial organization” concept is defined as “Meeting conditions required for realization of a specific activity in a specific “space” and ensuring compliance between the “space and the activity”. Taking as basis the above-given concept, this study has developed a research model by using the concepts of need, activity and space. This study has also examined whether these affordances -which are defined as mobility, naturality and openness- are influential on use level of campus open spaces.

Implementation phase of the study is composed of several stages. In the first stage, campus open spaces to be used in the study have been selected in line with the preferences of the adolescents and have been examined in terms of spatial affordances. In the second stage, these spaces have been classified according to pre-defined affordances to form the typology. In the third stage, behavioural observations have been made in the campus open spaces, selected and classified in the former stages. In the last stage of the study implementation, all the data obtained in the previous stages have been compiled so as to compare the study spaces according to the level of affordances they provide.

At the end of the study, the study model has shown that affordances of mobility, naturality and openness are effective on use of such spaces by the adolescents, i.e. on their needs met by the space and the activities carried out in that space.
