Summary:

To get any success in setting up lawns that are very important for parks and gardens from a functional and aesthetical stand point, it is important to select the right seed mixtures, and sow them in the proper soil in the right season.

In this study, we intented to determine the most suitable seed mixtures for the conditions of Trabzon by sowing different seed mixtures on various soil layers carrying grasses. Three seed mixtures were sown in the four soil types first in June and later in September, with two replicates.

Grass caracteristics such as color, covering, establishment speed, height and number of new branches which may also be the criteria to determine the quality of grasses were evaluated statistically employing Tukey test

As a result, It is seen that the soil having fertiliser had the best results. Due to the organic matter it contained, the soil with a 1/3 fertilizer coused weeds to grow. The soil with stream sands speeded grasses growing up by providing some ventilation to them. But, it should be known that the use of sea sand would slow down grass growth when it is not possible to procure stream sands. It is better to apply the mixtures with high ratio of Lolium perenne on the lands desired to be established fast. It appeared that the height of grasses, the rate of land coverage and branch growth were higher in September than in June.
