Summary:

Historical process analyses shows that human recreational requirements have been

increased. Stress particularly caused by the city life leads to increasing of these requirements.

Because of this, there is a necessity to build some kinds of landscape in the city areas for

different sex, age, jobs and especially life difference of city’s humans so as to relax and

refresh as a bodies and souls and can be gain eagerness. City parks giving service as a city

recreational areas are the most important of these landscapes.

The purposes of this study are researching visual and functional characteristics of plant

compositions, identifying plant diversities and determining users’ demands and perception

within design criteria in some coastal parks in Samsun, Rize and Ordu. to do this, observation

in the parks, researches, analyzes and evaluations were carried out. First of all, the parks

defined into five different parts, which are entries, sitting areas, focus points, circulation and

borders, basically according to their main environmental characteristics. Afterwards, plant

materials having been used to create landscape texture in these areas were determined. In the

last stage, these plant materials were analyzed to make plant design characteristics clear and

of the plants.

As a result, visual and functional parameters to be used within plant design process

were defined as “positive” and “significant” all over the research area. In addition, according

to the questionnaires, preferences belonging to the users in a locality make some

classifications regarding each others, and this situation has some differences depending on the

cities. Hence, what should be done when designing a park was defined and some proposals

were created.
