Summary:

When the floor coverings at the open spaces are examined in Trabzon, various types

of space characteristics can be observed. Different floor covering materials can be

observed applied according to the functions and identities of areas and spaces. When floor

coverings being planned at the open spaces, designers rule out necessities and preferences

of buildings at these spaces. Because of these reasons, the emerging designs become dead

changes in floor covering characteristics from 1900s until today, to determine the current

situation at different time periods and to show whether changes have fulfilled needs in a

healty way.

The therotical part, phase I involes historical development of floors and the role of

floor coverings in design. Additionally, a literatur review has been conducted regarding

floor coverings and studies on floor coverings and results of them studies have been

presented. In the research methodolgy, photograph analysis has been carried out in order to

determine the relationship between floor characteristcs and spatial identities. In phase III,

which consists of findings and discussion; the current stuation and the historical process

have been analyzed by data obtained from photograph analysis. It has also been determined

that; floor coverings change in relation to needs functionally and aesthetically.
