| Summary: In spite of the fact that there is not enough evidence that the commercial function is major reason for the development of early urban settlements, it has a significant importance in the formation of settlements and shaping of form of cities. Components of the urban trade function may vary according to the change in form of production, supply of goods through market , transportation and differantiation in cultural, social and physical structure of various geographies. This variation and qualitative difference cause the differentiation in the trade function areas of city and thereby different forms of the urban spatial structure. With the industrial revolution, due to the influence on largescale mass at social level, fundamental changes have occured in socio-economic structure. In todays globalizing world, these socio-economic changes and technological developments that are almost impossible to be tracked and the effects of these developments social,cultural and physical reflections on the urban geography have caused the reshaping of the function zones. Todays spatial structure of trade function is theoretically argued and the practical counterparts are searched in the metropolitan and city-region areas.
