Summary:

      Public spaces are very important in terms of social life and to the existence of individual. This comes from public space that creates the base the aesthetics degree for community and the life quality of city. Public spaces are where the existence of individual is bound to power conflicts and shape of daily life. These places directly affect the design, production and consumption process. Revealing the identity and evaluating these places is one of the subjects of urban science.

As long as all the relationship and interactions lives in public spaces democratic participation will approach to its ideal level. The art actions that takes place in public spaces need to be considered closely according to sociology and urban science. Independence of public art will create a path to reach the art that is designed for urban spaces.

      When 20. century s movements are established by opposite culture visual codes, globalization shared the local cultures and provides the same language with images. Today communication is provided via images and symbols. Cities are the symbol of freedom that provides adverse actions in these period of time. And this creates the underground culture. Walls, as found in the system to serve, stance also is a tool of social struggle in the face of hegemonic. Also a tool against the speech of culture graffities; stencil, sticker, poster with products such as do-it-yourself culture that is trying to wake up.

The aim of this study; evaluating public art in urban space, the graffiti and discussing Istanbul, Beyoğlu Yüksek Kaldırım Street practices analyzing the concrete foundings
