Summary:

The study area is located in the south of the Eastern Pontides. The bottom of the study area is formed by the Gümüşhane granite. This unit is uncomfortably overlain by the Liassic aged Şenköy Formation. The Berdiga Formation settling down the Şenköy Formation is uncomfortably overlain by the Upper Cretaceous aged Karadere Formation and Sırataşlar Formation, respectively. All the units are covered by alluvium.

The field studies suggest that the folds, faults and fractures correspond with the main fracture directions of the Eastern Pontide as NW-SE, NE-SW and E-W. If the relationships between folds and faults are taken into account; the folds may be formed via the motions of the blocks split by the faults and as the result of the unique deformation stage.

The results of fold analysis imply that the folds in the study area are symmetrical plunging folds and based on the Fleuty diagram, they are classified as upright sub-horizontal and upright gently plunging folds. Additionally, (Z) type e-echelon, transversal and longitudinal folds are described in the region.

According to structural analysis studies (folds and fault analysis), the study area were deformed by NW-SE directed pressure tensions during post-Eocene time.
