Summary:

In the scope of this study, 1/25.000 scaled geological map of the surrounding area and 1/100 scaled geological map of tunnel were done. It was determined that left tube’s entrance portal of the tunnel excavated through weathered andesitic and basaltic tuff, agglomerate and basalt which are belong to Eocene aged Kabaköy Formation.

In the laboratory studies, physical, mechanical and elastical properties of intact rocks in geotechnical units were determined by using the cores and cubic samples extracted from rock blocks. In the tunnel, scan-line surveys were performed to determine properties of discontinuities.

Based on the scan-line surveys and the laboratory data, the rock mass of the left tube’s entrance portal of the tunnel was classified according to Q, RMR and NATM rock mass classification systems, and proper support elements were determined. The rock mass strength was calculated by means of Hoek-Brown empirical approach.

According to analytic evaluation of the rock mass classification systems and the results obtained from the laboratory studies, stress-deformation analyses were done to find out support-rock interactions and deformations on support elements.

Using all of the obtained data, the left tube’s entrance portal of the Konakönü Tunnel was grouped into four geotechnical units, and geotechnical designs for each geotechnical units were performed.
