Summary:

The Women and Relationship Between Women and Forest Resources in Forest Villages in Trabzon

This study defines women’s and men’s (for a healthy comparison) demographic and socio economic structure; expectations from forests and forestry; and how and how much they benefit from the forest resources. Its aim is to help the units which are interested in or studying on the rural development issue by helping them in terms of creating more functional plans with the assistance of the findings of the study. Area of the research is 68 prototype forest villages in Trabzon which are selected randomly. Face to face questionnaire is done with 611 women and 237 men (above the age of 15) in those villages and at the same time the general futures of those villages are identified. The findings have been tested with help of tables for frequencies and cross tabs tests.

In this study it is identified that the socio-economic condition of the subjects is under Turkey- average; better than rural area average of some regions; and above many developing countries average. It is very important to be aware of the facts that 89, 5 % of women have health insurance; the percentage of literacy of the women between the age of 15- 24 is 99 %; and the educational background directly affect social choices. Because, all those shed a light on the current condition of women live in forest villages.

On the other hand, comparing with many developing countries, the direct income from forest resources and the contribution of forest resources to the family budget is not satisfactory. The contribution of forest resources to the family budget is decreasing day by day and the forest villages have generally became residential space for retired people. While the socio economic and cultural development in the forest villages eases women’s life, it decreases the production of agriculture and livestock.
