Summary:

Water stress was applied to Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), seedlings which are representing their natural distribution and are from ten different seed stands, to determine effects of drought stress on morphological and physiological characteristics. Differences, related to water stress, in physiological and morphological characters are researched.

Morphological characters like seedling length, root collar diameter, stem weight both dry and fresh, root weight both dry and fresh and numbers of lateral leaves are measured on seedlings that were raised under nursery and stress conditions. Length and diameter increase in seedlings during water stress vegetation period and differences between origins were determined. Also, irrigation and vegetation period related, changes in some physiological characteristics (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll, total carbohydrate and proline etc.) were researched.

Duncan test and variance analysis was made, with SPSS statistics program, to gathered data. As a result, differences, in both morphological and physiological characteristics between origins were found. Seedling growths were fast on april-may but starting from june growth was no more. Increase in root collar diameter continued throughout vegetation period. Water stress was decreasing water potential but was increasing photosyntethic pigments, total carbohydrates and proline amount. Photosyntethic pigments and carbohydrate amounts were high at the beginning of vegetation period and decreased during summer but increased again when vegetation period was over. However, proline amount showed an opposite state as it was at a low level at the beginning of vegetation period, increased during summer and decreased again at the end of vegetation.

There were significant in correlations between the measured characteristics. Hierarchical cluster analysis made to put up groups which are measured parameters. In aggregation analysis, while Akyazı-Dokurcun, Dirgine and Değirmendere origins were in one group all other origins formed other group.
