Summary:

The greatest cause of the global climate change that has come to light in recent years is the serious increase in the proportion of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Since it is the carbon dioxide, which has the highest proportion in greenhouse gases, the major effect of the greenhouse originates from this gas. The most important work to be done to fight the global climate change is to reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In this context, forest ecosystems that contain the highest amount of carbon dioxide in terrestrial ecosystems come to the forefront. The forests hold carbon dioxide in the air and store them as carbon by biochemically convertion. For this reason, the amount of carbon stored by forests needs to be determined. In this study, the temporal change of the forest and carbon accumulation within the boundaries of Trabzon Yomra District was investigated. In this context, the management plans of the research area were used for four terms (1970 - 1990 - 2009 and 2019). According to the results, the presence of forests in Yomra region between 1970-2019 was 534292,22 m3 increased. Again, the carbon accumulation in the research area is 6,46 tone in 1970, 15,34 tone in 1984, 37,94 tone in 2009 and 25,43 tone for 2019. The highest carbon accumulation was calculated for 2009. As a result of this study, suggestions were made on the necessity of carbon forestry in addition to classical forestry in Yomra region.
